It participates in endocytosis and determines whether receptors, nutrients, lipids, and other cargo will be recycled, transported to another cellular location, or delivered to lysosomes for degradation.

The endosomal compartment is not a single organelle. It includes early endosomes, recycling endosomes, late endosomes, and intermediate structures that mature and exchange material continuously. This system is essential for cell signaling, membrane renewal, receptor regulation, nutrient uptake, and cellular homeostasis.

How does the endosomal system work?

The process begins when regions of the plasma membrane enclose extracellular molecules or membrane proteins and generate endocytic vesicles. These vesicles generally deliver their contents to early endosomes, which function as major sorting stations within the cell.

Some proteins and lipids are returned to the plasma membrane through rapid or slower recycling pathways. Other cargo remains within the system as early endosomes mature into late endosomes. During maturation, the internal environment becomes progressively more acidic. This acidification can separate ligands from their receptors and supports proteins involved in cargo processing and transport.

Late endosomes may fuse with lysosomes, where proteins, lipids, and other biological molecules are degraded. Some endosomes also develop into multivesicular bodies containing small intraluminal vesicles formed by inward budding of the endosomal membrane. When a multivesicular body fuses with the plasma membrane, these vesicles can be released into the extracellular environment and are then called exosomes.
